Merry Christmas 2012!!

Yesterday we had a lot of heavy, wet snow - leaving us with a winter wonderland.  No dreaming of a white Christmas here!!  This is just one of the many reasons that I love Wisconsin. 

I never fail to be amazed at how comfortable the sheep seem in the snow.  In the summer they spend their days laying around chewing their cud.  However, in the winter they are much more active.  They move about and play more...not at all minding the snow as it builds up on their well insulated coats. 

The sheep and I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and hope you have a blessed New Year!!!

A Very Sheepie Christmas to All!

I've been having fun looking for "sheepie" items to add to my Christmas list.  Since those who frequent this blog are probably just as sheep crazy as myself I figured ya'll would like to see some of them!! 

Mary Kilvert has some of the cutest sheep illustrations, as well as needle felted sheep.  She is located in the UK, so shipping takes a wee bit longer than here in the states.  Her items are well worth the wait though!  Here are some of her needle felted sheep:

2013 Calendar Contest!

This year I have THREE 2013 NABSSAR Babydoll Southdown sheep calendars to give away!  However, I'm only giving away two here on my blog.  I will be giving away the third calendar on the Kellane Farm Facebook page.

Ebony and Ivory

 



This past spring I was blessed with two lambs: a black ram and a white ewe.  Both of them were incredibly beautiful and I ended up keeping them both.  The black one actually sold and I bought him back.  I'll tell his story in a future post.  Today, however, I'm posting pictures of these lambs that were taken in May - when they were about a month old.  These lambs were best of buds and did everything together.  Every time I saw them they were side by side...and every time the song "Ebony and Ivory" started running a loop through my head. 

 

When it came time to remove the ram lamb from the ewe pen it was hard.  I hated to separate the two companions.  They did seem to really miss each other too.  The mom didn't care that the ram lamb was gone and acted like nothing ever happened.  However, the little white ewe lamb definitely missed her buddy and called to him frequently throughout the day. 

 

Here are the two buddies.  Notice how their body positions are so similar in most of these photos.  Quite humorous!

 

 

 

 

 

 



Lamb Adventures

Well, I'm still trying to catch up on things that were put off for the wedding.  Slowly, but surely they are getting done.  Today's blog post is one of them!  These photos were taken the third day that the 2012 lambs were put into the big pen.  Things had settled down and everyone was getting along for the most part.  As I look back at the photos it really surprises me how fast the lambs grow - sometimes in quick bursts.  Human children can grow overnight, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that lambs do as well!

Day One in the Big Pen

Well, I'm FINALLY back after a much too long hiatus!  My daughter was married on June 9 and not only was I mother-of-the-bride, but I was also blessed to be the maid-of-honor.  Therefore, I found myself swamped with things to do the months leading up to the wedding.  Now that the wedding is over, I've been busy trying to catch-up on things. 

Below are some photos that I took of the lambs on the first day that they were moved from the jugs along with their mamas and put into the big pen with the other sheep.  I've always found flock dynamics interesting....especially so when lambs are put into the midst.  Some of the ewes that have never lambed will run from the little ones in terror.  Others will charge and butt the lambs.  This year, both of my moms were very protective of their babies.  They constantly put themselves between the lamb and other sheep or humans.  With curious lambs roaming a larger pen it certainly kept the mamas on their toes! 

hmm....this looks like a good place for a nap!
